Liverpool had to act in the winter transfer window. The Reds had been utterly devastated by injuries throughout the season and it all came to a head just days before the window shut. Two defenders arrived, one from the Championship. Preston North End manager Alex Neil has explained what Ben Davies asked him when he heard of the Liverpool bid.
Liverpool sign Ben Davies
Before transfer deadline day Liverpool had no senior defenders fit in the first team.
The Reds had lost every last one of their senior centre backs for the rest of the season.
As a result reinforcements were vital.
Liverpool brought in Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke, the 20-year-old arriving with an option to make the deal permanent for £18m.
The Reds also signed Ben Davies from Preston North End.
The 25-year-old arrived on a long term deal for a fee of around £2m.
Alex Neil on Ben Davies
Liverpool moving for Ben Davies was something of a surprise.
There had been dozens of names floated but his wasn’t until the very last minute.
Speaking to Lancs Live, Preston manager Alex Neil spoke about a conversation he had with Ben Davies ahead of the move:
“I think I was happier than he was to be honest!
“I think he was shocked and I just said ‘listen, you’ve just got to make sure that you get this across the line.’
“And his first question was ‘How do you think Peter (Ridsdale, Preston’s owners’ representative) will be? Do you think he will let me go?’ and I just told him not to worry.”
What RTK has to say
Alex Neil must have been so proud of Ben Davies.
The 25-year-old was regarded as one of the best in the Championship, his step up to the Premier League may have been unexpected but it was undoubtedly deserved.
Fingers crossed he proves he’s able to make the step up in the coming weeks and months, we certainly need him to.
