Exclusive: Emile Heskey heaps praise on Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool have finally started to turn around their dreadful run of form. The Reds have put together back to back wins to end a torrid streak of five games without a victory. There’s been some rejigging along the way and one player has caught the eye. Speaking exclusively to Rousing the Kop, Emile Heskey has heaped praise on Xherdan Shaqiri.

Back to back wins

Liverpool spent the the last leg of December and most of January in pretty desperate form.

The injury crisis caught up with the side as they went four games without scoring.

Players were out of position and makeshift centre back partnerships were deployed.

Finally the run was ended last week by back to back 3-1 wins in London.

The second game saw a trademark Liverpool goal as Trent Alexander-Arnold found Xherdan Shaqiri on the break who in turn lobbed a ball in for Mo Salah to finish expertly.

Emile Heskey on Xherdan Shaqiri

The Reds have had to turn to their fringe players of late in order to protect the fitness of the starters and also to freshen things up.

Emile Heskey has been impressed by Xherdan Shaqiri. In an exclusive interview with Rousing the Kop, we asked the ex-England star what changed to turn the Reds fortunes around, Emile told us:

“A lot of it is luck. Then Xherdan Shaqiri, we spoke about him before. I said he’s more of an impact on the bench but these games he’s done fantastic.

“This is what you need from fringe players. If you get the opportunity to play then make a different, make the manager think twice about taking you off. This is what Shaqiri has done.

“Having players like him come in and make a difference has been fantastic.”

What RTK has to say

Finally I got Emile Heskey to admit that Xherdan Shaqiri is fantastic as a starter.

We’d been debating for a few weeks whether or not he deserved to keep his place in the first XI and he proved his worth against West Ham.

He is a top footballer who has struggled with availability but now that he’s fit he’s proved himself vital.
