Nat Phillips has one game to assure himself a Liverpool future. Beyond that, the 23-year-old may find it very difficult.
Nat Phillips faces a real fight to have a future with Liverpool. That’s after Monday’s transfer deadline day that saw both Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak arrive.
Each have more experience than Phillips and can easily usurp him in the first-team setup.
But then, Phillips was never supposed to have any chance at Liverpool future. He’s only getting games because a series of long-term injuries decimated the Reds’ defence.
Phillips, though, has played very well. We’re impressed and think he has still got a chance to secure a long-term Liverpool place.

He better do it in the next game, though.
It’ll take Kabak and Davies a little time to get up to speed. We can’t imagine the plan is to throw both into the lineup against Brighton later today.
Now, Jurgen Klopp may head in that direction but we feel Phillips still has a very good chance of getting games.
Beyond that, though, it’ll be tough. Once Fabinho returns, it’ll be very easily to use him at the back alongside a new signing. And the further we get into the season, the better Davies and Kabak will be.
So if Phillips wants to stay in the picture, he must perform today. A good showing will force Klopp to consider him throughout the rest of the campaign.
If he struggles, that might be it for him. But more good performances will keep him in the fight for the rest of the season.
Beyond that? We find it hard to believe Liverpool would still have him in that picture next season. But we don’t think they’d head straight for a sale – likely a loan.
No matter what, though, this is Phillips’ only real chance to secure more games with Liverpool. This game promises to be huge for him.
