Chief executive confirms Liverpool are battling for £38m star

Liverpool have been busy in the past week. The Reds had to be. Jürgen Klopp finally has reinforcements for his defence, at least until the end of the season. Despite the recent arrivals we may still be looking at another defender. Bayern Munich Chief Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said Liverpool are battling him for Dayot Upamecano.

Liverpool centre back signings

The Reds finally addressed their issues at the back this week.

After months of fans begging for reinforcements the club acted.

Ben Davies was signed from Preston for £2m.

Shortly afterwards the club confirmed the loan arrival of Ozan Kabak, the Reds have the option of making the switch permanent for £18m.

The moves came just before the announcement that Joel Matip will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle ligament injury.

Liverpool still in for Dayot Upamecano

The Reds may well have brought in reinforcements but there are still long term targets to pursue.

Bayern Munich Chief Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been quoted by The Mirror as suggesting Liverpool want to sign Dayot Upamecano:

“In addition to Bayern Munich, there are at least two quite attractive clubs interested…

“The fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in him proves that he has very good qualities. He can replace David Alaba.”

What RTK has to say

Liverpool signing Dayot Upamecano in the summer would be ideal, the defender has a £38m release clause.

Ben Davies will be a solid backup option next season when Virgil van Dijk is back.

Ozan Kabak has some six months to prove himself.

The Frenchman is one of the most coveted defenders in Europe, his arrival could be transformational for us next term, particularly given the injury issues our current stars have suffered. We need reliability.

Hopefully we can pip Bayern Munich to his signature.
