Report: Duje Caleta-Car was waiting at airport as Liverpool bid rejected

Liverpool failed with a £20m bid for Duje Caleta-Car, according to reports. The defender was even waiting at the airport.

This comes from RMC Sport in France. They say that Liverpool offered £20m (€23m) for Duje Caleta-Car but Marseille turned them down.

This one was clearly relatively close, however. The report claims that the 23-year-old was waiting at the airport with his girlfriend today.

They planned on flying to Manchester ahead of a trip down the M62 to Liverpool.

Unfortunately, Marseille rejected Liverpool’s £20m bid. The player will remain in France until at least the end of the season.

What RTK has to say

It’s a shame for everyone but Marseille, then. We do wonder about that £20m bid, though.

It’s more likely that Liverpool offered a similar deal to the proposed Ozan Kabak one. That is, a loan with a £20m option to buy.

And if that was the case, we have to understand the rejection.

Caleta-Car is a notable target, though. We’ve seen the Kabak reports, as well as links to David Carmo, and the Croatian stands out.

Both Kabak and Carmo are 20 and 21 respectively. Caleta-Car is 24 – a far more experienced target than the others.

That’s an interesting strategy from Liverpool, then. He’s got less room to grow and suggests they had one eye on the idea of a more read-made player arriving today.

But instead, they’ll head in a different direction. Caleta-Car never got past the airport – but the fact he was there in the first place suggests this one was quite close.

As we’ve said about Carmo, though, this one isn’t completely dead in the water. Liverpool’s Kabak deal will reportedly be an option to buy – they could opt against it and head in a completely different direction again in the summer.

Perhaps we’ll see Caleta-Car’s name crop up once again, then. Only time will tell.
