Liverpool are in dire need of a defender and that fact hasn’t been lost on the recruitment team – even though, for a while, it looked like it was. The Reds have lost all of their centre backs to injury so getting one through the door is vital. Liverpool signing Ben Davies could be a Michael Edwards masterstroke.
Who is Ben Davies?
25-year-old Ben Davies plays as a centre back for Preston North End.
The Championship star can also fill in at left back when needed.
Davies rose through the ranks at the Preston academy.
He has enjoyed loan spells as York City, Tranmere Rovers, Southport, Newport County and Fleetwood Town.
His last loan spell ended in 2017 and since then he’s gone on to establish himself as one of the second tier’s best defenders.
Liverpool set to sign Ben Davies
According to various outlets, Liverpool are set to sign Ben Davies for £2m.
The centre back was thought to be joining Celtic before Liverpool swooped in.
Davies is available on the cheap due to his contract expiring in six months time.
Michael Edwards masterstroke
He never gets it wrong does he?
Ben Davies is one of the best defenders in the Championship and we’re bagging him for just £2m.
Should he go on to reach the levels expected of him at Liverpool then we’ve bagged a bargain.
However, he could well be a stop gap. We aren’t expecting Davies to transform into a Champions League level defender overnight.
The key here is that we’re set to sign a player full of potential for just £2m.
The Reds could make their money back along with a healthy profit should they decide to move Davies on in a year’s time when we’ve managed to secure our preferred targets.
Not only has Michael Edwards found us a stop gap, he’s also found us one who could help the club fund a bigger move in future in the event that he doesn’t establish himself as a first choice.
