Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal 'conversations' amid Liverpool reports

Mikel Arteta confirms that Arsenal are in conversations that could affect Liverpool. The Reds reportedly want on Gunner, in particular.

Liverpool really might want to sign Shkodran Mustafi. That’s according to the Athletic, the Telegraph and Sky Germany.

The Reds suddenly want to do business in the January window – despite limited time – after further injuries to centre-halves. Jurgen Klopp is now without his first, second, third and fourth choices at the back.

Options are hard to come by, however. One could be Mustafi, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

The Sky Germany report says the Reds could pay a small fee to get the player early. But it’s also possible that Arsenal simply release him now – they did the same with Sokratis, after all.

And now Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta confirms that they are in conversations that could benefit Liverpool – without mentioning the Reds by name.

“There are some conversations [with our players] going on at the moment,” said Arteta, per the Mirror. “The club is willing to help some of them.

“Whether we find a solution or not, I don’t know.”

Mustafi may well be free to leave the Gunners this month, then.

What RTK has to say

Mustafi isn’t exactly at the top of our list of dream Liverpool signings. He doesn’t even top our list of defenders currently linked with Liverpool, in fact.

But needs must and all that.

Liverpool could just really do with someone who can stay reliably fit for the next five months and offer some experience at the back.

Mustafi does fit that profile – the only doubts are whether he’s good enough. He’s not good enough for Arsenal, after all, and that is a lower standard than Liverpool.

It’s a desperate transfer, then, but a possible one. Arsenal appear willing to play ball on this and that makes it more viable than most potential deals.
