Report: Liverpool contact RB Leipzig over firm interest in Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool hold firm interest Ibrahima Konate and have made contact with RB Leipzig, according to reports. The Reds want a defender before the January transfer window closes.

This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Liverpool want to sign a defender this month after further injuries.

They’re not the only ones to claim this, either. Both The Times and the Telegraph say the same.

Both Fabinho and Joel Matip are now sidelined, along with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool are without their first, second, third and fourth-choice options at the back, then.

Where the Mirror do differ, though, is in a link to a player. Or two players, actually.

They say Liverpool have made contact with RB Leipzig. At first, that was because of an inquiry into Dayot Upamecano.

But the Mirror then says that Liverpool let Leipzig know they have ‘firm interest’ in Ibrahima Konate.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

That wasn’t the only link to the player on Friday, however. Christian Falk told BILD that Liverpool ‘were informed’ of Konate’s release-clause.

It’s apparently around £36m and comes into effect this summer.

The reports appear to add up, then – Liverpool, presumably, became aware of the clause as they asked about the player.

It seems there might be something to all this.

What RTK has to say

Sticking with just the Mirror report for now, we don’t know how Leipzig received Liverpool’s interest. It’s very possible they told them ‘no chance’.

The two clubs will meet in the Champions League Last 16, after all. Leipzig won’t want to help out their opponents.

But then we add the reported release clause. If Liverpool are prepared to go above it, then this might just happen.

Leipzig will be resigned to losing him in the summer and the extra money would surely tempt them. It just depends how much further Liverpool would go.

From our point of view, this one is still unlikely. For one, Konate is currently injured – which is something of a real red flag for him.

We just can’t see Liverpool wanting to spend lots on him when he’d almost certainly be a lot cheaper in the summer, too.

So we won’t hold our breath. At the same time, we’re open to a possible surprise here.
