Liverpool now want a January transfer, according to reports. The Reds face two difficult problems this late in the window, however.
This comes from The Times. They claim Liverpool have reversed their stance and will try to sign a defender in the January transfer window.
This comes after both Joel Matip and Fabinho picked up injuries this week. The duo will miss the weekend game against West Ham United.
And that’s significant. Liverpool are now without their first, second, third and fourth-choice centre-halves.
It’s enough to change their minds on a signing this month, having initially wanted to avoid spending. Now, though, they may have no choice.
But it won’t be as simple as wanting one. Liverpool face two problems as they try to sign a new defender.
The first is availability. The report suggests that’s the ‘overriding issue’. Teams won’t want to sell this late in the window, after all, when there is little time to replace anyone.
The other issue is finance. Liverpool don’t just need someone who’s available but they need someone they can afford.
It’s all well and good having the option of a transfer there but it means little if the selling club wants £80m for a player not worth that.
“I am not sure there is an £80 million centre back available at the moment and a club thinks, ‘We can get £80 million for him so we will sell him,'” said Jurgen Klopp. “I don’t think that’s the case. Actually, pretty much I know. This calibre of player the teams would not sell them now.”
What RTK has to say
This could be a very interesting final few days of the transfer window, then.

Overall, we’re just grateful the club want to try and save the season, really. It’s just a shame it comes after injuries to the only centre-half options.
As for who is available – we have no idea. Liverpool have left this incredibly late and my have to settle for little-known player.
We’re confident they can find someone worthwhile, though. They kind of need to, at this point.
