Report: Liverpool enquire about 12-goal Pote after breakout season

Liverpool like the look of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pote, according to reports. The 22-year-old is enjoying a breakthrough season.

This comes from Record in Portugal. They claim that Liverpool have held informal discussions about Pote – though, they’re not the only ones.

Manchester United are there, too, as the player continues to generate hype.

Pote apparently has a £55m release clause, however, and a team would have to pay that. But after this season, that’s entirely plausible.

Pote has 12 goals from 13 games, despite not being an out-and-out striker. In fact, Whoscored has his positions this season down as attacking midfield and centre-mid.

There’s an easy way to figure out his style, in fact – Sporting signed him in the summer to replace Bruno Fernandes.

Now the player leads Liga NOS in goals this season and by some way. No one else in the Portuguese top flight has more than seven to his 12.

Yet, somehow, Pote finds the time to create 1.8 chances per game this season – good enough for 5th in the league.

There’s a lot to be excited about here.

What RTK has to say

Sign us up as interested. 22 years old, thriving on signing for a new team, and pulling out performances that are unconventional for his position.

And all from a player who left Wolves in 2019 to join Famalicao.

The hang-up is whether Sporting would actually want his full £55m release clause here. As impressive as this year is, spending that much money on the back of one starring season is a bit much.

But then, people said the same about Bruno Fernandes after his breakout season with Sporting. Everyone would happily pay that for him now.

This is one to keep an eye on, then. We’ll stress again – there is no report of an actual bid or formal discussions. Liverpool have just asked Sporting about the player.

But it sounds as though the Reds are at least interested. And it sounds as though they have very good reason to be.
