Liverpool will target ‘young and interesting’ players this summer. This comes after rejecting the opportunity to sign in January.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano. Speaking on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, the journalist explained that Liverpool have plans in mind for the summer.

“They are planning for next summer,” said Romano. “With interesting and young players.”

That’s very relevant, too, as the Reds apparently turned down Sokratis this month. They could have got the 32-year-old defender for free but, according to Romano, decided he wasn’t ‘perfect’.

You can read our thoughts on that one here.

What RTK has to say

We’ll leave aside the urgent need for a defender for a moment.

‘Interesting’ could mean just about anything in football but the fact Liverpool want young players is significant. It comes a year after signing 29-year-old Thiago as their major signing, after all.

But Liverpool’s current squad does dictate they should sign younger players. Virtually every star is pushing 30, outside of the full-backs.

That’s a situation that could get quite ugly if Liverpool don’t address it soon. It sounds as though they’re going to do just that, however.

So who could Liverpool target this summer? Well, Romano himself linked the Reds with Renato Sanches recently. The 23-year-old feels like a natural replacement for Gini Wijnaldum.

Then we had Rory Smith hint that Liverpool want 21-year-old defender Ibrahima Konate on Guardian Football Weekly.

As for up top, that’s where it gets exciting. There have been links to Kylian Mbappe (per AS), Erling Haaland (per Eurosport) and Jadon Sancho (per the Independent) – all of which are under 23. And all of which are potential superstars.

So that’s all very exciting but it does bring us back around to the need for a signing now. Liverpool are struggling and can’t find a good result.

Should they continue to struggle, they could slip down the table and make these signings very difficult. The plans aren’t really worth much if they can’t make them happen.

All we can really do now is hope the higher-ups have made the right call in not signing this month. Because if they get it wrong, the summer won’t be as ‘interesting’ as they hope.
