Liverpool fans react to latest Virgil van Dijk injury update

Football injury and rehab expert Dr. Raj has provided some added insight to the extent of Virgil van Dijk’s recovery process. He says the fact that the Dutchman only required surgery on his ACL was a ‘positive indicator’ for his rehabilitation process.

Van Dijk, 29, has been out of action for Liverpool since October 17 after he suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage during the 2-2 draw with Everton.

Dr. Raj’s latest update is undoubtedly good news, then. Despite Liverpool refusing to put a timeline on the injury, the report suggests that as a result of his surgery, Van Dijk’s recovery period should be around eight to nine months.

Had the Liverpool defender also required surgery on his posterior cruciate ligament in addition to his ACL, then that could have extended to return timeline to 12+ months.

Judging by the report from 3cbPerformance, it seems that Van Dijk avoided the need for additional surgery on his PCL. With that said, it suggests that his return could be closer than originally expected.

Still, Liverpool are unlikely to rush Van Dijk ahead of schedule, so there is every possibility he could still be out for the remainder of the season.

Lovren on Van Dijk

Dejan Lovren, Van Dijk’s former teammate, urged the Reds No.4 not to rush his comeback from injury just to play a part in this summer’s European Championships.

“We talked about his recovery, about the knee,” Lovren said. “You know that Virgil has a serious injury – the cruciate ligaments are damaged.

“Moreover, when this happened, at first he did not even feel anything. He starts to walk, everything is fine, and after a few steps it gets worse and worse.

“But I hope he will be back in service soon. I advised Van Dijk not to speed up the recovery [to be fit] by Euro 2020.

“If the risk of relapse persists, it is best to wait.

“Virgil is young for a centre-back, he is only 29 years old. There will still be major tournaments in his career.”

As much as Liverpool currently miss their irreplaceable defensive lynchpin, it’s important that he isn’t risked ahead of the start of next season.

Let’s see what the Anfield faithful had to say on the latest update concerning Van Dijk…
