Rhys Williams may not like the latest reported Liverpool target. The Reds supposedly like the look of 18-year-old Kyron Gordon.
This report comes from the Daily Mail. They believe Liverpool, along with Everton, like the look of Sheffield United defender Kyron Gordon.
No, not the type of defensive signing we were all hoping for.
Liverpool are only monitoring the target for now but that they’re looking at all is bad news for Rhys Williams.
Gordon, after all, is an 18-year-old centre-half on the brink of senior first-team football. In other words, he’s another Williams.
Williams has played far more football than planned this season, of course. But he’s still just a young player hoping for a future at the club.
There isn’t much room for another one, however. Billy Koumetio is another in that age bracket, while there are suggestions the Reds also want 21-year-old Ibrahima Konate.
Rory Smith hinted at the latter on Guardian Football Weekly.
Williams, though, would be in the worst position. Liverpool aren’t signing Gordon to be behind him. Nor are they spending on Konate for anything less than a prominent role.
While Liverpool have looked at Williams and decided they need a signing. They haven’t properly tried the younger Koumetio.
So this really isn’t great news for Williams, who will face a tough future at Anfield. That was always likely to be the case but Liverpool looking at such similar players confirms it.
Instead, Williams’ future surely lies elsewhere. This season has worked in his favour in that regard, though.

Williams is now a 19-year-old defender with Premier League and Champions League experience. He’s played big games and helped beat Tottenham Hotspur.
There will be a decent side willing to take him on and develop him.
Liverpool, though, perhaps don’t have the time for that. They’d rather have a look at other players, bringing in young defenders who perhaps show more consistent promise.
