Harvey Elliott is putting in one of the most impressive seasons in the country right now. The Liverpool loanee is out of the spotlight.
Liverpool took a chance when they decided Harvey Elliott should spend one of his first seasons with the club elsewhere. Namely, at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.
On paper, that’s a step down from Liverpool, of course. But for a 17-year-old? It’s a big ask.
Few teenagers perform to any great degree at that level. You might get some breakthrough, like Jude Bellingham but even they don’t contribute at the high end of the division.
Bellingham played an entire season as a 16-year-old for Birmingham City last season. That’s incredible for his age and similarly, his output was incredible for his age.
But four goals and two assists over the course of a season isn’t elite. It’s just really promising from a teenager.
Which is why we can say, without much doubt, that Elliott is currently putting in one of England’s most impressive seasons.
Next level
Elliott is now 19 games into his first full senior season, playing in the Championship. He has four goals and eight assists.
That’s ridiculous. Elliott actually leads the league in assists, jointly with Michael Olise. But the Liverpool kid is two years younger than Olise, while no other teenager has more than two assists.
The deeper numbers look good, too. Elliott creates, on average, 2 chances per game – that’s good enough for fifth in the Championship (per Whoscored).
But what really stands out is the standard of player Elliott is hanging with. For instance, no other player in the top 15 is under 21, let alone a teenager.
No other player in the top five is under 23 – six years older than Elliott – and that’s Harry Wilson, another Liverpool loanee.
It means that Elliott, with literally no regular senior experience, is performing at the same level as some seasoned professionals. Both Wilson and Emiliano Buendia – two above Elliott – have full Premier League seasons under their belt.

What Elliott is doing at just 17 is simply remarkable. It’s going under the radar, really, as he’s at a midtable Championship side but few players in England are pulling of something as impressive as this.
But Liverpool fans should be very, very excited by it all. If he’s doing this now, he’s on course to be doing some incredibly special things in a few years’ time.
