There is still no agreement in place between Liverpool and Gini Wijnaldum in regards to a contract extension, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist claims that Liverpool made a new proposal to 30-year-old a few weeks ago, but the offer is yet to be accepted.

Romano states that Liverpool’s previous offer came in December, and it has not been accepted by Wijnaldum. Whether or not an agreement can still be reached before the summer, then, remains to be seen.

Furthermore, the Italian transfer guru said that matters are beginning to get complicated. The Reds are still no closer to an answer from the Dutchman, who is free to begin pre-contract negotiations with other clubs.

Romano’s update follows a report from The Mirror that claimed that Wijnaldum would snub any further contract offers from Liverpool to secure a ‘dream’ move to Barcelona.

It is believed that Wijnaldum – who currently earns £75,000-a-week according to Spotrac – is intent on linking up with his former national team coach Ronald Koeman at the Camp Nou following in the footsteps of fellow countrymen such as the iconic Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard.

What RTK has to say – Can Liverpool reach Wijnaldum compromise?

So, it seems as there could still be hope for Liverpool to keep hold of Wijnaldum, after all.

Spanish publication AS recently reported that Barcelona’s presidential election was pushed back to March as a result of the global pandemic.

With that said, it hands Liverpool an additional few months to talk to Wijandlum and see if a compromise can be agreed.

Moreover, by the time Barcelona get to March, there is every possibility that Ronald Koeman may not even be in-charge. The Catalonia giants trail La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid by eight points, after all, having played two games more than Diego Simeone’s team.

Indeed, this being optimistic as the longer this contractual dispute continues to linger on, the more likely Wijnaldum will indeed leave Liverpool.

It’s good to remain hopeful, but at the same time, we need to be realistic that a summer exit seems inevitable at present.
