Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho are both to begin contractual discussions with Liverpool in the coming weeks, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist and transfer guru believes the English champions have made it their priority to tie down two integral Jurgen Klopp players down to long-term lucrative new deals.
Both players are contracted to the club until 2023, but Romano confirms that Liverpool want to extend their time at Anfield even further to secure their services during the peak years of their respective careers.
Van Dijk, 29, and Fabinho, 27, have both yet to sign contract extensions since their respective moves from Southampton and Monaco. The defensive pair are amongst two of Klopp’s most indispensable assets, and it seems the Reds have recognised as such.
What RTK has to say
This will be music to supporter’s ears. The fact Liverpool are determined to secure both player’s long-term futures indicates that the Reds anticipate the pair to remain at Anfield for years to come.
This is particularly interesting in the case of Van Dijk. Such a statement from Liverpool means the Reds anticipate there to be no lasting damage from the Dutchman’s knee injury.
At 29, there was always a risk that Van Dijk would never be at his peak again. However, Liverpool’s renewal of faith demonstrates that such a scenario has been avoided.
With Fabinho, too, Liverpool are clearly determined to avoid a similar situation to that of Gini Wijnaldum. The Brazil international has arguably been Klopp’s most important player this season, after all.
Moreover, tying down two truly elite players during the peak years of their careers should be enough to fend off any European rivals with intentions of signing the Liverpool duo in the future.
