Liverpool are still in the race for David Alaba, according to one report. It suggests previous claims elsewhere were premature.
This comes from the Daily Mail. They say Real Madrid have not won the race for David Alaba – yet. Los Blancos remain favourites, however.
But Liverpool ‘remain in contention’ for the Austrian, who will leave Bayern Munich at the end of his contract this year.
Alaba’s father has confirmed that nothing is settled in an interview with BILD.
This does add up, then. Liverpool may still have a chance to sign David Alaba who is ‘still deliberating’ over his decision.
What RTK has to say
It’s difficult to know what to think here. On the face of it, we’d absolutely love Alaba at Liverpool. He’s a fantastic player with Thiago-level experience – you can’t have too many of those.
At the same time, the Guardian – who claimed this deal was done – says the wages with Real would be around £204k-a-wee after tax. We’re not sure Liverpool can afford that.
We’re not even sure they’d want to. That’s an enormous amount of money to pay Alaba.
He’s great, of course, but is he going to be so decisive that you should pay him that? Maybe if you’re Real and lacking a cohesive squad. Not if you’re Liverpool, though.

So while we’d love to see Alaba at Anfield, we only want it to happen for a decent price. The 28-year-old’s quality might command huge wages but what he’d bring to Liverpool doesn’t.
It really is as simple as that.
But Liverpool should fight this one until the end as it’s not often that a player like Alaba is available for free. So put up your best offer, certainly, but if Real are willing to go to £204k-a-week after tax, let them.
There’s no need to match that, though.
