Liverpool made the ‘best economical’ offer for David Alaba, says Fabrizio Romano. Given his previous reports, it suggests the Reds made an enormous bid.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast. He claims Liverpool made the ‘best economical’ offer for David Alaba.

“As a top free agent, David Alaba was hearing from many bids,” said Romano. “His priority has always been Real Madrid but the best bid, talking about the economical side, was from Liverpool.”

So what could that bid have been? Now, we don’t have the complete details here but we do have a previous report from Romano.

He wrote for the Guardian this week that Alaba had agreed to a deal with Real. The journalist also mentioned some contract details – four-years at £204k-a-week after tax.

That is an enormous contract offer yet, apparently, Liverpool bettered it. We don’t know if that was with a higher wage, higher bonuses, or simply a longer deal, though.

But it appears the Reds were willing to put more total money on the table than Real. Alaba just prioritised Los Blancos, leaving Liverpool with little chance.

What RTK has to say

Our biggest question here is: Why?

There are undoubtedly a lot of fantastic positives in signing Alaba. He’s an incredible player and a remarkably versatile one, too.

The sticking point for us, though, is where Liverpool would use him that justifies such a huge contract. He’s not getting into the centre-half pairing ahead of Virgil van Dijk when he returns but both play on the left side.

Similarly, he’s not getting ahead of Andy Robertson at left-back. The Scot is just too important a part of Liverpool’s system.

Perhaps the idea was to use him as Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement in midfield? That makes the most sense for us.

His real value, though, could have been in the fact he can cover all of those roles. We know Liverpool love versatility, so that might have been it.

Regardless, Real appear to have won this race. It’s a shame – players as good as Alaba don’t come along too often, especially on a free transfer.
