Fabrizio Romano believes Liverpool have two stars singled out for new contracts. The duo will be priorities over everyone else.
Liverpool will soon offer new contracts to two stars in particular, according to Fabrizio Romano. The journalist says that’s there plan and could begin over the next couple of months.
“[Virgil] van Dijk and Fabinho – they are the priorities for Liverpool and new contracts,” Romano said on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast.
“And the negotiations will start with Van Dijk, in particular, in some months.”
What RTK has to say
This follows on from a Daily Mail report that mentioned four stars up for new contracts. That, too, included Van Dijk and Fabinho but added Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah.
Fabinho feels like a clear, obvious renewal. He’s still only 27 and at the top of his game. While he also plays in a position where, often, you only improve with age.
Van Dijk’s situation is more complicated. He’s a very athletic player but is coming back from a serious knee injury – will that affect his abilities?
We really don’t know yet. Liverpool potentially offering him a new contract is a really good sign, though. We can’t imagine they’d entertain the idea unless they were confident of a full recovery.
But there doesn’t seem to be a rush. It perhaps makes the most sense to wait until he’s at least back in training before offering him anything.

At 29, Van Dijk is going to come out of his physical prime soon anyway. Couple that with his injury and there is potential for a quick decline.
Obviously, we’ll cross our fingers and hope he’s the same old sensational defender he’s always been. And these contract plans fill us with hope in that regard.
So overall, let’s hope Liverpool get both deals over the line before the end of the year.
