Report: Liverpool considering 4 world-class stars for contract renewals

Liverpool have four stars in mind for contract renewals, according to reports. It’s something that could come into play later in the year.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They believe Liverpool aren’t currently looking to do deals as they carefully manage their finances.

But the Reds could look to change that before too long. Four Liverpool stars are in line for contract renewals – or at least consideration.

Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho are those stars. All four could get extensions, then. Although, the Mail does stress that these are only considerations.

The nice thing here is that each player is a lynchpin of the team. Alisson is obviously the primary goalkeeper, while Van Dijk is the key defender.

Fabinho is the defensive midfielder and Salah the main attacker. Perhaps, then, these are the four who Liverpool want to continue their build around.

But there is one important factor: ages.

Alisson and Fabinho are easy ones. The former is a goalkeeper and still only 28 – players in his position can play close to 40.

Fabinho is 27, meaning he’s got a good few years in him, too. As a defensive midfielder, he could easily play another six years at the top.

But for Salah and Van Dijk, there are questions. Salah is still only 28 but as a forward who leans on his pace, you have to wonder how long he can play at the top for.

Will the Egyptian still be an elite threat at 32 or 33? It depends how long he retains his burst of speed for.

As for Van Dijk, he’s 29. That’s certainly not too old for a defender, although he again uses his pace and athleticism.

Usually, we wouldn’t be worried but he’s coming off a serious knee injury. Will that affect his long-term career? Will he be the same player?

We won’t know those answers until he returns and plays a few games.

We’d offer Fabinho and Alisson new deals tomorrow. They should be locked-in long-term. As for the other two, it does benefit Liverpool to wait until the end of the year.

You’d imagine both would be well worth extensions but there’s no harm in waiting.
