Michael Olise could be exactly what Liverpool need as they head into a massive summer. The Reds will want all the help they can get.
We believe Liverpool will undergo a major squad revamp over the summer. Recent reports point that way, suggesting the Reds want young but experienced players.
They’re linked with plenty – including at the top end of the market. We’re talking Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho, and Erling Haaland.
Those are players who will cost a fortune, taking up much of the budget. So how do Liverpool assure they can afford everything?
How do they pay for a superstar but also fill out their defence and replace Gini Wijnaldum in midfield?
Bargains are the answer. Try and find fantastic value in squad players, affording Liverpool greater financial power when going for stars.
And we think one fine example of that is Michael Olise.
Olise is having a fantastic season in the Championship. He’s got eight assists – the most in the league – and has four goals to go with them.
Doing that at his age is fantastic – Olise only turned 19 a month ago.
His versatility, too, stands out. Per Whscored, Olise primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but only a fraction of his goals and assists come from there.
He’s got two goals and two assists from his favoured role. But another goal and three assists have come off the bench. Then the teenager has goals and assists from left-wing, right-wing and centre-forward.
That all makes Olise a sensational squad option. He can come off the bench to great effect, while he covers four different positions.
It makes him an even brighter prospect, too. He’s far more likely to get games and minutes if he can play anywhere in attack. That should see him develop faster with more experience.
The potential is there as a true midfield option, too, pulling him back from the more attacking role. It’s something Liverpool managed with Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – two players far deeper into their careers.
In that sense, he could take the squad place from Wijnaldum.
Then comes the most magnificent part – the Athletic claims Olise has an £8m release clause. That’s the kind of bargain that makes any kind of squad revamp so much easier.
The same report includes a glowing review from ex-Reading boss Jose Gomes.
“He was maybe the most wonderful and fantastic talent I’ve worked with,” he said. Before describing Olise as “Really special”. Big words from someone who has worked at Benfica and Porto.
Olise looks great, earns rave reviews from people in the game, and is a reported bargain. It’s one that surely makes sense for Liverpool.
