Liverpool faced an impossible task in convincing Gini Wijnaldum to stay. That’s per the latest reports on his contract situation.

The Mirror reported on Saturday that Gini Wijnaldum has made up his mind – he wants to join Barcelona. On top of that, it seems Liverpool never really had a chance here.

The report states that Wijnaldum sees Barcelona as a dream club. He wants to follow in the footsteps of Dutch legends like Johann Cruyff, Frank Rijkaard and Ronald Koeman in leaving his mark on the club.

And in that sense, Liverpool faced an impossible task with Wijnaldum. This was never in their hands and it feels sort of inevitable.

Inevitable

Barcelona were always going to want Wijnaldum, after all. He’s an elite player and his connection with Koeman, his former national boss, guaranteed that.

And they don’t have to pay a transfer fee – why wouldn’t they be in for him?

So when you consider it all, Liverpool were always second-best here. They had to convince Wijnaldum to reject his dream and stick with them.

While it should be simple to say ‘stick with the far better team’, it’s possible the Dutchman looked at the situation and wondered if he’d be a first-team regular.

We imagine the plan is Fabinho – Thiago – Jordan Henderson as a midfielder trio, pushing Wijnaldum into more of a squad role.

So considering that up against a guaranteed starter’s place for Barcelona, a dream club, and you see how Liverpool faced an impossible task.

It’s unfortunate. We all want Wijnaldum to stay as he’s been an integral part of the team over the last few years. Ever since his £25m arrival in 2016, in fact.

But it appears he’s after something else, now. We understand his position, of course, and Liverpool’s.

It’s just time to part ways.
