Barcelona may have just seen their plan to sign Gini Wijnaldum hit a real complication. The Catalonians reportedly want the Liverpool midfielder.
Barcelona plan on signing Gini Wijnaldum in 2021. That much seems clear, given all the recent reports.
Most notable, there’s this from Sky Sports. Earlier in January, they claimed that Barcelona definitely want Wijnaldum.
It’s easy to understand why – he’s a fantastic player, has bags of championship experience, and he’s free. Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season and he can agree a deal with a non-domestic club as of this month.
But there’s also a key part in that story – that Barcelona want to wait until their presidential elections in order to complete deals. The club will have a new president, after all, and he may want to take things in an entirely different direction.

Now, that election was scheduled for January 24th, meaning Barcelona wouldn’t have to wait out the transfer window.
But now things have hit a snag. New lockdown measures in the city have pushed those elections all the way back to March 7th, per AS.
Barcelona, then, would have to wait quite some time before completing a deal for Wijnaldum.
That’s if they stick to those plans, of course. They might just put their faith in Ronald Koeman and give him the player he wants.
Otherwise, they run the risk of someone else convincing Wijnaldum to sign a deal with them before March – like Liverpool.
That’s where we hope this goes, of course. We’d love the player to stay at Liverpool as Wijnaldum has had such an incredible impact since joining for £25m back in 2016.
Hopefully, this is the bit of luck Liverpool needed. It throws some uncertainty onto Barcelona’s plans and that could spill over onto Wijnaldum himself.
