Liverpool could save millions on centre back signing if report is accurate

Liverpool need to reinforce their back four. Jürgen Klopp is currently without a single senior centre back in the first team after a string of injuries devastated his back line. There have been calls for a January buy but it looks as though the Reds will wait until the summer. If reports of the next defensive buy are true than Liverpool can save millions using Joel Matip as a makeweight.

Liverpool’s devastated defence

When the Reds sold Dejan Lovren in the summer we all got excited.

Who will they bring in to replace him we wondered.

Then they signed Thiago, Diogo Jota and we sort of forgot.

Then the window closed and we thought hey wait a minute they didn’t replace Dejan Lovren.

Then Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez got injured and it was truly dreadful.

Since then Joel Matip has been doing what Joel Matip does, he plays a game or two now and then in between injuries.

We need backup.

Matip replacement

According to a report by The Independent, Liverpool know signing a defender is imperative.

The Reds are well aware of the gravity of the situation but the financial implications of the pandemic mean that splashing cash in January isn’t entirely feasible.

The Independent has claimed that when Liverpool do sign a centre back in the summer they will be a replacement for Joel Matip.

Matip could save millions as makeweight

The Reds are likely going to be targeting an in demand centre back.

Dayot Upamecano is the name on everyone’s lips.

Though there are other names persistently linked such as Ben White and Perr Schuurs.

Whoever the Reds go for, if they’re to replace our long limbed Cameroonian, we can save millions by using Joel Matip as a makeweight in the deal.

We’re strapped for cash because of lost revenue, swapping Matip for his replacement seems like a sensible idea given the financial constraints we face.
