Liverpool potentially loaning Eder Militao sounds far better than it is

Eder Militao is available on loan, according to reports. It’s a deal that sounds better for Liverpool than it actually is.

Quite a few outlets report Eder Militao is available but we’ll pick just one. Duncan Castles told the Transfer Window podcast that Real Madrid are open to offers.

“Madrid are trying to offload the player, they want ideally to sell,” he said. “I’m told their asking price is €50 million [£44.5m].

“But there is the option there of getting Militao on a six-month loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season.”

Liverpool should get involved then, surely? That’s what several fans suggest on Twitter, for instance.

Well, even if it sounds crazy to say no, we still think Liverpool should ignore it. This is one that sounds far better than it is.

Short-term gain

Liverpool actually tracked Militao before he moved to Europe (per Goal). They know about him and, we’d imagine, rate him reasonably well.

The player looked great after moving to FC Porto, too. That earned him a massive transfer to Real where, in truth, it’s been nothing but downhill.

Militao only played 15 La Liga games last season and even that looks like a full season compared to this campaign. The Brazilian has played just three games this season – and only two were a full 90 minutes.

And that’s our main problem here: there’s no way he’s ready to step into Liverpool’s title race. Virtually zero chance.

Liverpool rarely throw players straight into the team as it is. For that to happen, they’re usually ready-made stars like Alisson or Virgil van Dijk.

Essentially, players with little doubt around them. Not if Fabinho went straight in, barely playing a game until November.

So add that mentality to Militao’s fitness and it’s hard to see how he’d play anything like regular football for at least two months.

And at that point, what are you doing with him? He’s hardly going to cover your injury crisis if he’s only around for maybe 18 months.

The loan wouldn’t be free, after all, and that seems like a real waste of money. If Liverpool are still competitive for the major trophies by the time he’s ready, they clearly don’t need him.

So we just don’t see this one as a possibility. Perhaps there’s a chance there in the summer but as cover for this season, it just doesn’t make much sense.
