Liverpool like two 20-year-old centre-halves, according to reports. Such interest hints at the Reds’ transfer plans for 2021.
Telefoot journalist Julien Maynard claimed late last week that Liverpool were watching the situation around Mohamed Simakan. The 20-year-old defender is close to a transfer, it seems.
But not to Anfield. Instead, Simakan looks likely to join AC Milan and RB Leipzig. Liverpool wait on the outside, seeing what happens.
We start this week with a similar report about Loic Bade from Le10Sport. Bade is another 20-year-old defender who, once again, could join Milan.
Liverpool watch the situation closely, they say, and Bade could become a target this summer if he continues to improve.
Two very similar situations, then. Liverpool like the look of two players but mustn’t be totally convinced enough to move in January.
Instead, they’ll wait and see what happens, potentially moving in the summer.
This all hints at Liverpool’s mentality with defenders. They’re looking at young players competing in the first-team – and they don’t necessarily want them now.
That could change with a few weeks to go in this transfer window. But as of now, it appears Liverpool are lining players up for summer interest.
Bade and Simakan are unlikely to be the only defenders Liverpool hold interest in, after all. But known interest in both does suggest the type of player they’re looking at closely.
From this, we can say that Liverpool want long-term players and that short-term options aren’t necessarily the preference here.
It’s easy to switch that stance during an injury crisis but if the Reds are okay with what they have, they’re looking long-term.
Jurgen Klopp’s recent words certainly suggest that Liverpool won’t spend this summer. Journalist Fabrizio Romano says it’s impossible to sign a top defender this month.
Instead, then, it appears that Liverpool will move for a defender in the summer. Specifically, they want a long-term prospect for a post-Virgil van Dijk era.
