Liverpool face quite the race if they want to sign Dayot Upamecano, according to reports. The Reds are one of seven huge clubs looking at the player.
This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that Chelsea have entered the race for Dayot Upamecano.
Importantly, the Frenchman has a release clause that comes into effect at the end of the season. SportBild claimed a few months ago that the clause was around £35m. It means anyone can sign the player for that amount – as long as he agrees, of course.
Convincing Upamecano is the key, then. Do that and you get a 22-year-old defender with several years experience in both the Bundesliga and Champions League.
He’s the only non-Liverpool defender in the ESM Team of the Season for 2019/20, to highlight his standing. Upamecano feels like an absolute bargain, given his current ability and enormous potential.

Thus at least seven major clubs want the player. The Mail mentions Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool.
This promises to be quite the battle, then.
What RTK has to say
It wasn’t too long ago that we’d look at this situation and say Liverpool have absolutely no chance of winning it. Instead, we’d have them as one of the favourites.
It’s worth noting that the Athletic gave their own update on this situation last month. They mentioned that United were no longer in the Upamecano race and that Bayern led the way.
Now, that shouldn’t surprise anyone. He’s a successful player in Germany – of course Bayern lead the way.
Liverpool have the power to change that, though. They’re a major club, after all, competing at the top.
It may well hinge on how much football they’re willing to give Upamecano. Will he play over Joe Gomez? How do Liverpool plan on using Virgil van Dijk post-knee injury?
Those are the real questions here. If they come out favourably for Upamecano, we think Liverpool can win the whole race.
