Journalist’s claim suggests Liverpool strategy over Mohamed Simakan

Liverpool like the look of Mohamed Simakan, according to one journalist. It sounds as though they’re taking a particularly approach to it all, though.

Telefoot’s Julien Maynard believes Liverpool watch the Mohamed Simakan situation with interest. But they’re not currently involved.

Two clubs are, though – AC Milan and RB Leipzig. They are each close to agreement with RC Strasbourg over a potential move for the 20-year-old.

He’d cost around £18m, according to Sky Sports, while TuttoMercatoWeb think it’s closer to £16m. Either way, we can see the price range here.

That seems like a good price for everything Simakan offers. He’s playing in a top-five league, he’s still only 20 and he’s versatile enough to play multiple positions.

In this market, that’s well worth £18m. It’s worth far more than that, really.

But it may be that Liverpool want to take a long-term approach here. It would explain why they’re merely waiting in the wings.

Sure thing

One thing Simakan isn’t is a definite answer. He’s inexperienced and young. He’s also never played for a top side, while he needs to improve to be Liverpool-standard.

All ask questions – no matter how small. Simakan might be good value but is he someone Liverpool want taking up a spot in their squad?

The Reds may prefer a more sure-thing taking that role. There’s a big opportunity cost, then, by signing Simakan. Liverpool only realistically have room for one defender.

Instead, Liverpool might prefer watching the player at a new club and paying more for a near-guaranteed star. Someone who has answered a couple more questions.

After all, the £75m they paid for Virgil van Dijk was undoubtedly better value than nearly every signing in the club’s history – despite being a record.

It appears Liverpool want to play things that way, then. It makes sense to us. If they’re near-certain on him, then make the move now but anything less than that, it’s best to wait.
