Inter will move ahead with step one of their reported plan for Gini Wijnaldum. The Italians may have a shot at the Dutchman.
Inter have a reported plan to sign Gini Wijnaldum. That’s according to report from FC Inter News, of the TuttoMercatoWeb network.
The plan is relatively straightforward. They believe they have a chance of convincing Wijnaldum to join but need to open space on their wage bill.
The easiest way to do that, apparently, is selling Christian Eriksen. He only joined a year ago for £17m but has never fit in.
If Inter can move him on, then they can offer Wijnaldum what he wants. Given that they also believe Barcelona can’t afford to, it puts them in a very strong position.
Well, it appears step one of that plan is well underway. Chief Executive Beppe Marotta openly declared on Wednesday that the club will look to sell Eriksen, per Sky Sports.
In doing so, they’d be able to agree a deal with £25m Wijnaldum as soon as January.
And we expect them to get him, in truth. Liverpool are in a tough position regarding Wijnaldum, as he supposedly wants a four-year contract.
You can imagine he wants a significant pay-rise, too. That’s not easy for Liverpool to do when he’s 30.
Wijnaldum could drop out of the starting XI this season, let alone by the end of a four-year deal. Liverpool appear hesitant to renew his expiring contract, while Inter would surely be happy to give him what he wants.
They’re certainly making moves in that direction.
