Transformative signing

Few signings have had such a transformative impact on the side as Virgil van Dijk.

There were eyebrows raised by some fans when we forked out £75m to sign him from Southampton.

The Dutchman came in and immediately calmed the defence.

He added a touch of class and commanded the back line to a Champions League final in his first few months with the club.

Since then he’s established himself as the best centre back in the world bar none.

He was incredibly unlucky to miss out on the Ballon d’Or in 2019.

Beckenbauer on Van Dijk

We often see the Reds’ talismanic centre back come in for praise.

He’s the best in the world, it’s only natural.

Recently Franz Beckenbauer has hailed Virgil van Dijk, telling France Football:

“With his way and style of playing football, Virgil van Dijk really impresses me.

“I started to notice him at Liverpool and in the Dutch national team. He has this power and ability in him that are quite impressive.

“He shows it on all levels. I don’t see any weaknesses in him.

“At first glance, because of his stature, you might think he lacks speed and agility, but that’s not the case at all.

“He is very manoeuvrable and can anticipate situations very well. I love this player.”

What RTK has to say

For a centre back there is surely no better man to be praised by than Der Kaiser.

Franz Beckenbauer praising Virgil van Dijk shows just how significant the Dutchman’s place in footballing history is.

The 29-year-old will surely go down as one of the greatest defenders the world has ever seen.

He still has a few years to go yet and we can’t wait to see him get even better.
