Liverpool can recreate their Premier League title message from last season. It was a message no one else managed a response for.
Leicester City 0, Liverpool 4. That game last season was the signature at the end of Premier League title message.
The Reds already appeared like favourites to win the Premier League by the time December 2019 rolled around. They’d beaten Manchester City 3-1, after all.
But that December was sensational. Liverpool ran through everyone and opened a sizeable gap at the top.
More than that, they truly looked unstoppable, winning every game. It was a time when they should have struggled, too, given the sheer amount of games they had to play.
They were in the FIFA Club World Cup out in Qatar, had a League Cup quarter final against Aston Villa – all on top of the traditional winter fixture list.
And they won every single game (Villa aside, where they played the kids).
Then came Leicester at the King Power on Boxing Day. The Foxes were second and had a chance to bring Liverpool back down to earth.
Instead, the Reds dominated their opponents and won 4-0 in one of their best performances of the season.
It was the final part of their title message – we’re the top team and nothing is going to stop us.
Liverpool can send a similar title message this year.
Title message
The Reds haven’t been near as good this season, of course. But then, injuries sort of forced that.
Virtually everyone has been out at some stage, a few long-term. Virgil van Dijk, for instance, won’t play again this season.
And that should slow them down considerably. They’re a wounded team, after all, without several key players. The ones who do play are exhausted.
But Liverpool are three points clear at the top of the league after beating their nearest contenders. That’s a message in of itself but it can get better.
Liverpool play Crystal Palace, West Brom, and Newcastle United before the end of 2020. They’ll expect to win all of them.
And if they do, they could well be clear at the top. Tottenham Hotspur, in comparison, face Leicester, Wolves and Fulham – much, much tougher games.
Thus if Liverpool win these games, they may well open up a several-point gap at the top heading into January.
And January should see Thiago return, it could see Diogo Jota return. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in the squad.
We’ve seen Curtis Jones rise to new levels. Rhys Williams could be next, while Neco Williams looks stronger again.
That will all terrify the rest of the league. They’ll see the champions – wounded by injuries – sitting clear at the top and about to get considerably stronger.
It might not be as clear a title message as last season but Liverpool can repeat what they did last year. It’s just three games away.
