Jurgen Klopp may not move for a defender in the transfer window, according to reports. That’s because a defensive duo impressed the Liverpool manager.
This comes from the Athletic. They believe that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp ‘are unlikely’ to move for a defender in the January transfer window.
There’s a good reason for it, too – the boss believes he’s already found the reinforcements. Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have impressed Klopp and he’s set to go with them.
That would be a huge decision, of course. Neither Williams or Phillips were supposed to play an real part this season.
Instead, they could dictate Liverpool’s transfer plans and title challenge.
Moving up in the world
Williams and Phillips both spent last season out on loan – and neither in top-flight football. The former was all the way down in the English National League, while Phillips played 2. Bundesliga with Stuttgart.
And yet, right now, they’re filling in for Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as Liverpool chase English and European glory. That’s quite some rise.
Thus they must have seriously impressed Klopp over the last few months. They’ve certainly both had some great games.
Phillips was fantastic against Brighton and looked good against West Ham United, too. We think he’s a bit of a success story here.
Whereas Williams caught the eye on Wednesday. The 19-year-old went up against Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min but never looked out of his depth.
That suggests he has potential on its own.
Is that potential enough to gamble on this season? We’re not 100 per cent on that one. The safe option feels like signing someone who can help Liverpool challenge for the title.
But in Klopp, we trust, of course. If he believes they’re good enough, we’re inclined to believe him. And with that in mind, we’ll trust any lack of signings.
