Liverpool like the look of Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, according to reports. The Reds could line up a January transfer for the player.

This comes from Le10Sport in France. They claim that Liverpool have Renato Sanches at the top of their list to replace Gini Wijnaldum.

But in January, that is.

The Reds apparently like the look of Sanches as a winter recruit, should Wijnaldum disappear early. The Dutchman’s contract expires at the end of the season, of course.

Le10Sport says that Sanches’s profile appeals to Jurgen Klopp, who keeps his eye on French football. The Portuguese midfielder is the no.1 Wijnaldum alternative, as a result.

What RTK has to say

We don’t think there’s any real chance that Wijnaldum leaves early. Any fee Liverpool get just couldn’t compare with his value over the final months of the season.

Especially as the Reds deal with an injury crisis. Wijnaldum is a rare player in the squad in that he’s always available and versatile enough to cover various absentees.

So with all that in mind, we don’t believe Liverpool would move him on and bring in Sanches.

As for Sanches, though, we wouldn’t be shocked at any interest. He’s rebuilt his career in France after some really bad spells with Bayern Munich and Swansea City.

And Liverpool likes those players – at least, they like Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian did the same after flopping at Chelsea and Liverpool reaped the rewards.

Le10Sport don’t mention any potential fee, either. All we have to go on, then, is that Sanches joined Lille for £22m.

Exactly how much he now differs from that value is hard to say.

Regardless, though, we think this is probably one to revisit in the summer, rather than this winter. There are too many midfielders at the club as it is and we can’t see Wijnaldum opening up a spot.
