Liverpool have assembled a squad for the ages in recent years. A string of smart buys have seen the Reds conquer the world and more. Keeping the squad together must be a priority. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are looking to hand Virgil van Dijk a new contract.

Van Dijk injury blow
Liverpool’s season was completely derailed early on.
Virgil van Dijk limped out of the Merseyside Derby in October after being lunged at by Jordan Pickford.
The defender ruptured his ACL in the reckless challenge.
Bizarrely, the keeper wasn’t sent off for the knee high tackle.
We learned a day later that the centre back won’t feature again this season.
His absence has been a massive blow for the side, we are clearly missing his organisational skills and leadership.
Liverpool to give Van Dijk new contract
Our talismanic 29-year-old may not feature again this term but that apparently hasn’t deterred the Reds from looking to tie him down for the long term.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are looking to give Virgil van Dijk a new contract. The journalist told the Que Golazo podcast:
“Liverpool want in the new year to open new talks with the agent of Virgil van Dijk to extend his contract.
“They are so happy with the player, and van Dijk is so happy with Liverpool, so immediately after his injury they were saying ‘ok you are injured, but, you are our leader, so we also want you in the future.
“At the moment he has two more seasons of his contract at Liverpool, but they’re ready to extend for the next five years, so those talks are going to take place in the new year.
“Liverpool will go with van Dijk in the future, they don’t want to sell him. Jurgen Klopp is absolutely a big fan of van Dijk.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool giving Virgil van Dijk a new contract is great news.
We didn’t want to find ourselves in a situation in a couple of years where we are scrambling to tie him down amid interest from other clubs.
The Dutchman is utterly indispensable and should be kept along for as long as possible.
As he gets on he will be invaluable in the dressing room and in tutoring his successors.
