Liverpool have made some smart bargain signings in recent years. The Reds have brought in Andy Robbo for a pittance, Joel Matip and James Milner both arrived on free transfers. There are some nearly misses that we have to regret. Leon Goretzka has discussed nearly signing for Liverpool.

Who is Leon Goretzka?

25-year-old midfielder Leon Goretzka has become a mainstay of the Bayern Munich midfield.

The German joined the Bundesliga champions on a free transfer in the summer of 2018, leaving Schalke.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength and has recently seen his role increased in the side since the departure of Thiago.

This term he has made 10 league appearances, earning a WhoScored rating of 7.16.

Leon Goretzka on Liverpool interest

Michael Edwards is always on the lookout for a bargain.

As a result it is no surprise that Leon Goretzka was on the Liverpool radar back in 2018.

The German has opened up on the interest from Liverpool, telling The Athletic (via Daily Mail):

“[Liverpool] were a consideration, of course.

“They’re a great club, and their development since Klopp came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title.

“But I took a long time making my decision, and I was 100 percent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”

What RTK has to say

Had Leon Goretzka joined Liverpool in the past we’d be finding him incredibly useful right about now.

His dynamic performances in the Bayern midfield have helped alleviate the loss of Thiago.

At just 25-years-old he promises to only get better, alongside Joshua Kimmich the German champions have a partnership to last them a while.

Oh what could have been.
