Liverpool don’t often find themselves on the back foot in the transfer market. The Reds always appear to be two steps ahead and holding all the cards. Unusually we are somewhat hamstrung in one current situation. However, Liverpool hopes of keeping Gini Wijnaldum have been boosted by a report claiming it is ‘almost impossible’ for Barcelona to sign him in January.
Gini Wijnaldum indispensable
When Gini Wijnaldum arrived at Liverpool he was a goal grabbing attacking midfielder.
He’d been a shining light for Newcastle United in an unfortunate season which saw the Magpies relegated to the Championship.
During his time at Anfield we’ve seen Gini moulded into a dynamic, ball winning box to box player.
His industry and work rate have made him undroppable.
He leads by example in the middle of the park and can often be found chasing down lost causes in the dying moments.
Gini Wijnaldum and Barcelona
This summer Gini Wijnaldum was linked with a move to Barcelona.
The Catalan club were thought to be interested as the Dutchman entered the final year of his contract at Anfield.
Barca boss Ronald Koeman allegedly made the midfielder a ‘non-negotiable priority’ when he took over the Blaugrana.
No move materialised but Gini can negotiate with interested parties from January.
He is unlikely to move in January though, according to Mundo Deportivo it would be ‘almost impossible’ for Barcelona to sign him in the winter window due to financial constraints.
Boost for Liverpool hopes
Liverpool need to tie Gini Wijnaldum down to a new contract.
Barcelona being unable to afford a move in January means that the Reds could well have six months more to negotiate a deal with the Dutchman.
Gini would also have six months more to show the club why he deserves the terms he is demanding.
We simply cannot afford to lose him, Barca’s financial troubles could well save the day for us.
