Jurgen Klopp can’t use his match-winning tactic against Wolves until 2021

Jurgen Klopp turned to a wonderful tactic to beat Wolves on Sunday. The Liverpool boss can’t use it again until 2021, however.

Wolves are a team that likes to spring passes from the back. Usually, they aim for Raul Jimenez but his absence on Sunday meant they were always likely to look for their pace out wide.

The best way to beat this? Pressing. Which just so happens to be Liverpool’s speciality.

It’s a high-intensity way of playing that asks a lot of yours players. Liverpool had a fresh team for once, however, and that lined up well.

The Reds pressed Wolves whenever they could and limited those passes. It worked fantastically well and played a big part in the 4-0 win.

This is Liverpool playing their favourite style. Unfortunately, we’re unlikely to see it again until 2021.

Adapting

As we say, Liverpool had a fresh team for once. They hadn’t played for five days and because the Midtjylland clash is a dead-rubber, they didn’t need to rest anyone.

It meant we got to see Liverpool go all-out – a rarity in a compact and injury-hit season.

But while Jurgen Klopp had that luxury against Wolves, he won’t get it again for the next month.

Liverpool will play seven games between now and January 2nd. It’s effectively one every three games. That’s tough as it is, let alone with so many out with injuries.

It means Liverpool can’t afford to press like maniacs in any of these fixtures. Doing so risks injuries over this period, while also leaving you exhausted for the quickfire following game.

The Reds will have to revert back to being a little more conservative with their press, then. While the tactic worked wonders against Wolves, it’s just too risky for Klopp to use during such a key and difficult period of the season.
