'Convinced'; Garth Crooks doesn't see 'impeccable' Gini Wijnaldum staying

Garth Crooks hailed Gini Wijnaldum once again on Monday. He included the Dutchman in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Gini Wijnaldum undoubtedly had a wonderful game against Wolves on Sunday – he certainly impressed Garth Crooks.

The Dutchman played both holding midfield and box-to-box in the game. He was solid defensively, too, but his highlight was a fantastic goal to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead.

Crooks was suitably impressed, including Wijnaldum in his team of the week.

“The champions were formidable against Wolves and Georginio Wijnaldum was once again at the heart of the victory,” he said. “His goal, his first of the season, was fabulous and his performance impeccable.”

What RTK has to say

Wijnaldum really was brilliant against Wolves. But as with everything ‘Wijnaldum’ right now, it comes with the worry that he’s off.

Crooks actually touches on that.

“The Dutch international’s contract runs out at the end of the season and I am convinced he’s destined for Barcelona,” says Crooks. “In the meantime, he’s going nowhere.”

And that’s a real possibility. Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season and he can start talking to other clubs in under a month.

Performances like this make it tougher for Liverpool to keep him, though. Every shining display makes it more likely that another club comes in for him, and more likely they’ll give him what he wants.

Wijnaldum is playing really well, too. Crooks actually put him in his TOTW two weeks ago, which goes some way to show how much attention Wijnaldum is drawing himself.

Hopefully, that has a double-effect. It can make Wijnaldum believe he’s best at Liverpool, while also pushing the Reds to make a deal happen.

Otherwise, it really is becoming less and less likely that we still see Wijnaldum at Anfield next season as we get closer to January. We’ll be sure to savour every game this season, then.
