Liverpool have made some terrific defensive signings in the recent past. Virgil van Dijk was a transformative buy. Andy Robbo was a diamond in the rough. Joel Matip was a free transfer bargain. We’ve recently learned of a defensive signing which didn’t happen. Sebastien Squillaci has admitted he held transfer talks with Liverpool in the past.
Remember Squillaci?
Now 40-years-old and retired from the game, Sebastien Squillaci had a pretty successful career.
The Frenchman began his career with Toulon before he joined Monaco in 1998.
He went on to play 117 times for Monaco before joining Lyon in 2006.
Squillaci went on to have spells with Sevilla, Arsenal and Bastia before retiring in 2017.
The defender won the Ligue 1 title twice with Lyon, the Copa del Rey once with Sevilla and absolutely nothing with Arsenal.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Sebastien Squillaci has talked about Liverpool transfer talks from his time at Monaco.
The defender was on loan at Ajaccio when the Reds made an approach for him, he told the paper:
“It was when I was in Ajaccio, in my second year (2001-2002):
“I met Gérard Houllier in Paris to go to Liverpool.
“They were very interested. It didn’t happen because I returned to Monaco, who wanted to keep me.”

Sebastien Squillaci could’ve moved to Liverpool back in the day.
Of course we’ll all remember him for his time at Arsenal – well, remember may be too strong a word.
Perhaps his career would’ve been very different had he joined the Reds in the early 2000s.
In fairness to him, there’s probably not a lot he would change. He won a few trophies and enjoyed spells in France, Spain and England.
