Liverpool career of Adrian hangs by a thread after 23 games

Adrian may not have a career at Liverpool much longer after a midweek snub. Things hang by a thread after just 23 games for the Reds.

There were two big shocks with Jurgen Klopp’s lineup to face Ajax, with both linked to one another.

First, it was Alisson missing the game. He’s injured again and could well miss a few more games.

But the second – and bigger shock – was Caoimhin Kelleher being his replacement. The 22-year-old has never played a major senior game before.

Sitting on the bench? Adrian, the £30k-a-week 33-year-old. The Spaniard was fit to play, it seems, but is now behind Kelleher in the pecking order. And that’s a disaster for Adrian and his career with Liverpool.

Adrian is now 3rd-choice at best in goal and Kelleher hasn’t even had a proper chance. The Irishman isn’t some great prodigy Liverpool are desperate to get in the team, either.

Instead, he’s there because Klopp appears to trust him above his other options. In other words, Adrian’s experience and proven quality counts for less than Kelleher’s ability right now.

It is very, very difficult to see how the Spaniard rebounds from that. For one thing, Kelleher is now more experienced, having just played his first Champions League game.

If he also gets the nod at the weekend, that’s surely it for Adrian.

And as we say, Kelleher isn’t there because of what he might be. This isn’t a move to invest in and develop his potential. He’s simply a better option than Adrian right now, even in an important game.

So even if Kelleher fails, Liverpool will surely look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper. Be that from the youth team or a transfer.

We may well have seen the last of Adrian at Anfield.
