Curtis Jones will show off his year-long rise if he starts vs Ajax tonight. The teenager is becoming a go-to for Jurgen Klopp.
If Curtis Jones starts vs Ajax tonight, it’ll highlight just what an incredible year he’s had. It wasn’t too long ago that he was just a kid getting some minutes.
Jones shot to fame with the winning penalty against Arsenal on October 31st 2019. One month and one week later, he made his Premier League debut with some minutes against Bournemouth.
And now here we are, December 1st 2020, and Jones will likely make his third-consecutive Champions League start tonight. That’s some rise.
Now, injuries ‘help’ him with that, certainly. Jones is one of the very few to avoid injury and that led to consistent games for the first time.

But recent performances have been excellent – he’s more than earned a spot in the team. Jurgen Klopp said he’s playing like a 27-year-old, in fact, after Jones played the full 90 against Atalanta last week.
Another Champions League start would really highlight just how far he’s come, though. Simply because no one will bat an eyelid if he’s in the starting XI.
That’s quite incredible, really. Jones isn’t breaking into a team struggling at the bottom of the table, after all – these are the champions.
But Jones now looks and feels like another member of the squad. He plays well, holds his own, and fills a role as an attacking midfielder.
It makes you wonder just how far he can go. He’s still only 19 and has developed rapidly in one year – where will he be in another 12 months?
Honestly, if we had to make a prediction, we think he’ll be in the England squad. Perhaps not quite for the Euros next summer but post-tournament feels like a natural time for a call-up.
It’s certainly not something we’d put past him. At this rate, if might even be before then.
