Liverpool have a long tradition of producing top quality stars from within the academy. At the minute we have Trent Alexander-Arnold leading the side’s creative output having burst onto the scene from Kirkby. In the past the youth setup has produced a Ballon D’or winner in Michael Owen. One of our brightest prospects is making progress at the minute, Layton Stewart started his first game for Liverpool U23s this season.

Injury problems
Liverpool aren’t having the best time with injuries at the minute and these problems extend into the academy.
The young Reds lost Joe Hardy and Paul Glatzel to injury last week.
The pair will be out for several weeks after picking up ankle ligament problems.
Losing two forwards in one game has left the U23s needing to look deeper into the academy for options.
Layton Stewart Liverpool U23s start
This weekend Layton Stewart started his first Liverpool U23s match of the season.
The 18-year-old Scouser has been in phenomenal form for the U18s this term.
Such is his goal scoring prowess he’s been compared to Fernando Torres by some.
However, it was a day to forget for the youngster as the U23s were beaten 7-2 by Manchester City.
Stewart came close on a few occasions but he was denied by some terrific goalkeeping.
What RTK has to say
Layton Stewart has been in excellent form this season and he deserves the step up to the U23s as a reward.
Whilst this weekend won’t have been the start he dreamed of he still gave a good account of himself.
The Man City U23s side is a formidable one and our youngsters were caught on an off day.
Hopefully Layton Stewart will get further chances with the Liverpool U23s.
He is now just a step away from the first team and if he continues his development we should see him there in the not so distant future.
