Words from the agent of Philippe Coutinho on a potential transfer could prove lucrative to Liverpool. The Reds will want the player to stay put.

Kia Joorabchian, an agent of Philippe Coutinho, says the player won’t move in the January transfer window.

“I have not heard anything and we have no plans to move from Barça,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

Coutinho has played eight times for Barcelona this season after spending the last campaign with Bayern Munich. He joined the Catalonians from Liverpool, of course, in a huge £142m deal.

That £142m depends on clauses being met, however. Fortunately, Joorabchian’s words are great news in that regard.

Coutinho transfer

Per the Daily Mail, Liverpool will receive €20m (£18m) once Coutinho plays 100 times for Barcelona as per the original transfer. He’s set to meet that mark this season – but only if he stays beyond January.

His eight appearances this season put him on 84 for the club. In 16 games, provided he plays them all, he’ll meet that 100 mark on Valentine’s Day.

A lovely present to Liverpool, then.

But if he leaves the club in January, Liverpool will miss out on that cash – and we don’t want that. We’ll have to expect Barcelona to consider selling him throughout the month, however, in an attempt to save the expenditure.

It actually benefits them to lose him for free, if they purely want to save money. Otherwise, they’ll have to stop playing him shortly after the window ends.

It’ll come down to how valuable they see Coutinho. If he’s worth £18m to them, they’ll likely just keep him and pay the money.

He’s currently on two goals and two assists as Barcelona struggle in La Liga’s bottom half. From that, it’s hard to tell what they plan to do.

December will be a decisive month. If he performs, they won’t try very hard to sell him – or they’ll at least want a sizeable fee.

But if Coutinho disappoints – or the club does as a whole – they’ll surely sell him for whatever they can to try and rebuild.

Joorabchian’s words are encouraging, yes, but there’s still a ways to go with this one.
