Jurgen Klopp ‘positive’ over Gini Wijnaldum exit thanks to 2018 example

Jurgen Klopp says he’s ‘positive’ despite a potential Gini Wijnaldum exit. That’s because of a similar example from back in 2018.

Jurgen Klopp spoke candidly over a potential exit for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman can leave at the end of the season, after all, as his contract expires.

In fact, Wijnaldum can begin negotiating with non-domestic teams in January – not long at all, then.

Despite that, Klopp says he’s ‘positive’ dealing with the situation.

“As long as nothing is decided everything is possible, I am positive,” he said, per Sky Sports.

Klopp then explained why he has no reason to worry about Wijnaldum’s future performances.

“It is no problem. We’ve had situations like this before – with Emre Can for example,” said Klopp.

“He played and he gave his absolute everything until the last day of his contract and Gini will do the same, no doubt about that.”

What RTK has to say

While we certainly wonder about Wijnaldum’s future, we have to say that it’s never occurred to us that he could down tools.

Which is quite fantastic, really. It highlights just how professional and special Wijnaldum is – a consistently hard-working player who does what the team asks.

He’s certainly never come across as someone who would let his mind wander away from Liverpool. And as Klopp says, we’ve been here before with Can and that worked well as the Reds reached the Champions League final.

Now, we hope he stays. Wijnaldum is such an important player that losing him would cost Liverpool their champion system.

But it doesn’t look good, does it? He’s soon entering the final months and Klopp doesn’t appear to have any certainty himself. We could well see a farewell come May.

Until then, we know we’ll get the best of Wijnaldum. We need him, too, given the injury crisis. As we said quite recently – thank God Liverpool didn’t sell him in the summer.
