Jeremy Doku will surely cost Liverpool a fortune if they change minds

Jeremy Doku will likely cost anyone a fortune if they want the player going forward. Liverpool reportedly like the 18-year-old.

Rennes paid a significant cost for Jeremy Doku. They signed the teenager for around £24m, per RTL, taking a chance that he’s going to explode over the next few seasons.

And he might. Doku is a very talented young player and one Liverpool reportedly wanted. But as HLN explains, the Reds were in a tricky spot this summer.

The Belgian outlet says that Liverpool liked Doku a lot but couldn’t justify a move. That’s because the 18-year-old is too good to be an U23 player but not quite at the level for their first-team.

Thus the Reds passed on any move – but they still like him. Doku is still on their list, says HLN, and they’ll watch him over the next few years.

But it will surely cost them a fortune.

Heavy price

So Liverpool took a chance, really. They decided not to bring in Doku now as they couldn’t develop him properly.

They’re hoping that either he becomes an incredible player they feel sure about – or that he doesn’t really amount to much.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

Because if Liverpool at all want him, they’ll need to justify what will surely be a massive price-tag.

Firstly, there’s the original £24m fee – Rennes aren’t selling him for anything under that. But deals over the last two years show just how pricey young Ligue 1 forwards can get.

Nicolas Pepe, for instance, joined Arsenal for £72m – their club record. Then this year saw Victor Osimhen join Napoli for £63m. And that was after just 13 goals in 27 Ligue 1 games.

Liverpool really took a chance, then, because we don’t believe they’d have considered either of those players at their respective prices. If Doku ends up near their level, the Reds won’t get him.

And that will be disappointing. You could see them signing either player for half of their eventual fees – just not the astronomical prices they commanded. Doku, at that level, would be a very good player to have.

But Doku ends up with a price like this, he would have to become a superstar for the Reds to go back in for him. There’s just no other way to justify a move. We’ll just have to wait and see.
