Samuel Umtiti is available for a January move, according to reports. Liverpool should have eyes on this.
Sport claims that Barcelona want to sell four players in January. They’re rebuilding, after all, and clearly have players they don’t particularly want.
One of the four, however, should interest Liverpool. The Reds head into the January transfer window looking at defenders, given the recent injury crisis.
That’s not to say that they’ll definitely sign anyone, of course. But there’s no question that they’ll have eyes on whatever pops up.
And it appears Samuel Umtiti could be an option for January. The report claims he’s now open to a loan move.
Barcelona are looking to sell the World Cup winner, four-and-a-half years after paying around £22m to sign him from Lyon.
Given Umtiti’s natural ability, his experience as a winner at the highest level, and his comfort playing a high-line for a pressing side, surely Liverpool will look at this.
The only major negative here is his injury history. Bringing in an injured player as cover is a huge risk, of course, given he could break down and leave you with nothing.
But Liverpool reportedly made a loan offer for Ousmane Dembele this year. He’s a player with similar injury risk and it suggests the Reds fancy their chances at managing these players.
With that in mind, Umtiti could be a gamble worth taking. We’re not suggesting Liverpool break the bank to sign him, of course.
A loan deal could work perfectly, especially with an option to buy. If they can help recover Umtiti, they get a serial-winner with experience at the highest level.
He’s 27, too, and should enter his prime soon – if he stays fit. Altogether, it seems like a risk worth taking.
