Liverpool like RB Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai, according to reports. The player could be an ideal alternative to a previous target.

90min claims Liverpool are scouting Dominik Szoboszlai. The 20-year-old is making a real name for himself with RB Salzburg and a host of teams like him.

Now, Salzburg are not a team that holds onto top talents. You can look at Naby Keita, Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Erling Haaland for that – among others.

Typically they join RB Leipzig and SportBild claims that will happen with Szoboszlai for around £18m. But before that move is official, Liverpool really should sound this one out.

The Hungarian is enjoying a great season. In ten games across the Austrian Bundesliga and Champions League, he’s score three and assisted six.

He’s a very productive midfielder, then, and Liverpool may like that quite a bit.

Reports linking Liverpool will Szoboszlai actually date back to May, when the Daily Mail suggested interest. It appears that interest continued.

But we also know that Liverpool had their eyes elsewhere at that time. The Mirror claimed that same month that Houssem Aouar was a primary target for the summer.

What that does say, however, is that Liverpool wanted an attacking midfielder. Aouar is far further along in development, of course, but would likely command an enormous fee right now.

By the end of the transfer window, the Telegraph had his price at £54m. Quite some ways above Szoboszlai, then.

But the latter could fit better. He’s more raw of a talent, with far less expectation. That’s the kind of player Liverpool like.

Their team is littered with players they signed somewhat under the radar and then improved themselves. Szoboszlai’s current season suggests he’s got the potential to do just that.

He could be a great alternative to Aouar, then. He’s younger, cheaper, and if Liverpool work a little magic, could perhaps end up being just as good.
