Nikola Milenkovic could be the defender Liverpool are looking for. The Fiorentina man will reportedly drop in price.
We’ll start by saying that we haven’t seen any links between Nikola Milenkovic and Liverpool. But if reports are accurate, we expect there could be a few.
The Serbian is a highly-rated 23-year-old defender at Fiorentina. There have been links with Manchester United in the past, in fact, back when Jose Mourinho was boss.
Now, though, Milenkovic really could be off. His contract expires in 2022 and that, according to CalcioMercato, means Fiorentina are considering a sale.
That’s significant, too, as any sale would necessitate a price-drop. Reports from May, for instance, had AC Milan ready to offer around £27m.
But that clearly wasn’t high enough for La Viola. CalcioMercato would later claim that the club wanted closer to £36m.
But the same outlet would later say that the only genuine offer for Milenkovic was Milan putting under £14m on the table. That, unsurprisingly, didn’t get them anyway.
That report, however, mentions that with Fiorentina looking to sell, they’ll have to find a point between that £14m and £36m figure.
And that’s where Liverpool could come in.
Liverpool need defenders. Virgil van Dijk is gone for the season, Joe Gomez might just about make it back for the tail end, and Joel Matip can’t stay fit. They don’t actually have any more senior defenders.
Milenkovic is a good option, though. Fiorentina will supposedly give up on a new contract by Christmas and open the door for a sale – that suggests January is possible.
The Serbian has years of Serie A experience, is a good height (6ft3in), can win headers (averaging three per game this season) and can score goals (five last season).
All of that at 23 and available at a discounted price. If Liverpool do want to sign someone in January, a player with Milenkovic’s potential could be too good to pass up.
