Liverpool must look at Jerome Boateng after contract reports

Liverpool need to enquire about Jerome Boateng after reports over the player’s contract. The 32-year-old could be a great option.

Jerome Boateng might not be the player he used to be but Liverpool must keep an eye on this one.

SportBild report that Bayern Munich will not renew his contract and Boateng will leave at the end of the season.

But Liverpool might want to see if he could leave six months early. Bayern might not need him but the Reds certainly could.

Needs must

Boateng is 32 and not at the peak of his powers. Usually, he wouldn’t be on Liverpool’s radar, then.

But long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez put the team in an unusual position. Joel Matip, too, can’t stay fit – Liverpool need a centre-half in January.

And Boateng ticks a lot of boxes. He’s highly experienced, a winner with eight Bundesliga titles, and can offer a senior role immediately.

Importantly, he also knows how to play Liverpool’s style. Bayern, much like the Reds, play a mix of high-tempo pressing and possession football. They play with a high line and look to move the ball vertically, rather than sideways.

That knowledge means Boateng, over any other target, could seamlessly slot into this Liverpool team. It was the thinking behind signing Thiago and it could work again here.

On top of that, he has played with Thiago for years. There’s a natural defence/midfield combination there that Liverpool might take advantage of.

Tempting offer

Unlike Thiago and David Alaba, Boateng is a player Bayern are happy to move on. That suggests they may accept a small cash offer in January, then, rather than lose him for absolutely nothing in the summer.

It would give Boateng a last shot at being a first-team regular for a competitive side. Liverpool could use him for six months and assess their options in the summer.

His arrival wouldn’t interrupt long-term plans, either. He’ll quickly move aside for younger talents in a way that 29-year-old Kalidou Koulibaly, for example, perhaps wouldn’t.

Boateng, then, appears to be a good fit and potentially available at a good price.
