Virgil van Dijk injury

There are few players as reliable as Virgil van Dijk.

Since he signed for Liverpool he’s played near enough every single Premier League minute.

This all changed a few weeks ago when the Merseyside Derby saw one of its worst tackles of recent times.

Early on in the game Jordan Pickford flew into Virgil van Dijk’s knees, rupturing the defender’s ACL.

Bizarrely, the goalkeeper wasn’t sent off for the reckless lunge.

A day later we learned the extent of the injury, the centre back ruled out for the season.

Wijnaldum Netherlands captain

Given that the Reds’ talismanic centre back is out for the rest of the season, his national side needs a new skipper in his absence.

Frank de Boer has revealed that Gini Wijnaldum will be the Netherlands captain for the time being, NOS report him as saying:

“It’s of course sad that Virgil is not there. That’s a great loss.

“You only need to look at his achievements in recent years and what kind of personality he is within the group. But as always: as the one king falls away, the next king must rise

“Gini is a real connector. You saw that when the racism issue was topical. He then took the pioneering role.”

What RTK has to say

Liverpool have been dubbed the mentality monsters in the past, this latest achievement is just further evidence.

It takes a strong mentality to be captain, particularly of the national side, it is no surprise that the Dutch armband has gone from one Liverpool player to another.

Hopefully Wijnaldum does the Netherlands proud as captain, keeping the armband warm for his brother in defence.
